Project: Redevelopment of two major retail websites

This client had a required to integrate the Endeca search platform into two ecommerce sites to provide a dynamic contextual search and merchandising functionality.

Our involvement

A consultant from RJP Software acted as technical lead for the ASP.Net / Middle tier redevelopment work for two retail websites: www.game.co.uk and www.gamestation.co.uk. The data tier for the project was the Endeca contextual search platform.

The project was run using the SCRUM methodolody with daily stand up meetings and white board with post-it notes. Development work followed a TDD approach and the application was designed using design techniques such as MVP and Dependency Injection to facilitate testability. NMock was  selected as a mocking framework and all but the very skinny ASP.Net front end of the application was unit tested.

As well as the standard development tasks RJP Software were heavily involved in the performance testing / fixing aspects of the project. Using code profiling via DotTrace a number of application improvements were identified. Using improved application caching and re-engineering poorly performing areas of the application large performance gains were made.

An RJP Software consultant was also responsible for the SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) aspects of the applications. SEO friendly Urls, targetted meta data and XML sitemap were all implemented.

Technologies used

ASP.Net 3.5, C#, WCF, CSS, JQuery, DotTrace, Nunit, Nmock, Subversion, Cruise Control

Outcome

Both sites were successfully launched in October 2009. The sites have been well received by both customers and the Game business.
